We have visited Greece on many occasions since 1972. At the last count, we had visited Greece on 67 occasions and stayed on 38 Islands, some of them several times. Mostly, we have visited the islands but have also visited parts of the mainland where there are some beautiful locations.
Currently, our favourite islands are Agathonisi, Kassos, Kimolos and Anafi. However, we still try to visit new islands and there may be new favourites to discover.
In 2010, we first travelled to Greece by car, using a Land Rover Defender, by way of Amsterdam, Venice and Patras. From Piraeus, we took the ferry to Rhodes and island-hopped back to the Mainland. In 2011, we travelled almost the same route but stopped in Corfu. We then crossed to the mainland at Igoumenitsa and drove to Volos and onwards to the Sporades, returning by way of Meteora.
Again in 2012, we travelled the same route to Crete and worked our way back to the mainland visiting Folegandros and Sifnos. In 2013, we took the ferry from Trieste to Patras and visited Cephalonia and Ithaca. We travelled back to the UK through Italy, Austria and Germany.
In 2014, we again travelled to Eastern Crete, visiting Kassos, Santorini, where we visited Akrotiri, the recently opened Minoan site and onwards to Sikinos - a new island - and Delphi on the mainland.
In 2015, we decided not to travel to Greece by car but visited Kimolos in September.
In 2016, we again drove to Eastern Crete, returning by way of Santorini, Folegandros, Serifos, Kythnos, Sounion, Chania (in the Pelion) and Meteora.
In 2017, after visiting Metsovo, we drove (and ferried to Rhodes) and travelled through the Dodecanese Islands, visiting Agathonisi for the first time, and returning via Corvara in Badia and Salzburg
In 2018, we drove through Germany, Austria and Italy to Greece, ending up in Rhodes. we then travelled westward to Crete, Santorini, Folegandros and Ios - a new island- returning via Corvara in Badia.
Although a long way to drive, the advantages over a normal package or independent holiday are considerable.
